Field 03

Atmospheric electricity

Connect atmospheric ions, electric fields and cloud boundaries to measurable local processes.

How does charge move through air?

The atmosphere contains ions and charged particles. Field strength, charge concentration and the charge that actually reaches the target are different quantities. A field reading near an emitter does not establish the exposure inside a fog volume. Experimental interpretation needs delivery measurements alongside the droplet and optical response.

Questions worth measuring

  • Where is the delivered charge measured?
  • How do polarity, humidity and background aerosol alter the response?
  • Can a local microphysical effect be separated from changing weather?

The records below are a starting point for those questions. Read the original methods and results before applying a finding outside the tested setting.
