Fog & visibility

Follow the water and the particles: how fog forms, how its size distribution changes, and what an optical measurement can actually tell us.

What is between us and a clear view?

Fog is a population of droplets, together with the aerosol particles and water vapor around them. Water mass and light attenuation weight that population differently. A successful visibility experiment measures the optical endpoint directly, while the size distribution helps explain the change.

Questions worth measuring

  • Which wet sizes contribute most to attenuation?
  • Does a change persist after temperature, humidity and inlet conditions are accounted for?
  • Is the measurement representative of the volume people need to see through?

The records below are a starting point for those questions. Read the original methods and results before applying a finding outside the tested setting.
