What electrostatic fog collection means
Fog contains tiny liquid-water droplets. In an electrostatic collector, electrical forces can move charged droplets onto a collecting surface, where they join and drain away. An emitter, the field, collector geometry and airflow all influence which droplets are captured. Damak and Varanasi’s 2018 study is one experimental starting point.
Collecting water and improving visibility are separate measurements. Small particles can continue to scatter light after some water is removed. FogLab therefore compares direct optical attenuation with the collector powered and unpowered, alongside wet particle size, water collection, charge, flow and energy.
What exists today
The research library, browser tools, source notes and WX-FOG-001 v0.2 protocol are available now. FogLab is a proposed instrument and experiment. No weatherhill experiment has been run and no facility has been selected. The product images are concept artwork.
How the scope could grow
| Question | Evidence needed |
|---|---|
| Does power improve collection? | A qualified comparison against the same passive geometry, with measured electrical conditions and water balance. |
| Does it make the test air clearer? | Direct optical measurements, declared uncertainty and a repeatable improvement beyond the passive collector. |
| Does it work at an open site? | New evidence about bypass, incoming fog, spatial visibility, useful duration, energy and reliability. A duct result does not establish this. |
| Does an intervention enhance rainfall? | A separate atmospheric mechanism, trial design and attribution analysis. The fog program cannot answer a rainfall claim. |
Outdoor work has its own requirements
Any proposed field activity must be assessed for its actual method, purpose and location before it begins. In the United States, federal weather-modification reporting rules include certain intentional releases of charged particles and uses of electromagnetic radiation. Initial reporting is generally due at least ten days before a covered activity; the regulation also defines limited exceptions. A local scale or a research label alone does not settle whether an activity is covered.
15 CFR Part 908 provides the federal reporting requirements. NOAA’s reporting guidance explains the submission process. Filing a report is not a permit or endorsement. State and local law, site permissions and the facility’s operating requirements must be resolved separately.
How we communicate results
Report the comparator, geometry, environment, endpoint and uncertainty with the result. Keep measured observations distinct from calculations and illustrations. Record null and adverse outcomes, correct mistakes and make the evidence scope visible. The next stage should be justified by what the preceding stage actually established.
